Astro-Kinetic Reflection 

Temporally Conditioned Reverberative Thoughts 

Resulting from Astro-Kinetic Contemplation 



In retrograde a planet symbolizes all its best attributes reversed. Mercury is a benevolent sign of inter communion. Today Mercury goes into one of its dreaded retrogrades. The symbolism of this celestial event is “communication gone awry”, and since communication is so fundamental to what it means to be a human, the connotations are negative. But the mystery of the cosmos often sees reversals and oppositions of reversal as a complex dance of actualization. 


In  today’s Office of Readings, the first reading from Lamentations 5:1-22 gives us a keen sense of the oppositional toppling we experience in postlapsarian reality. “ We drink our own water – at a price;  we have to pay for what is our own firewood. … Slaves rule us;” this speaks to our own lives as much as it speaks to the conquest of Israel at the time. Water pours from the sky and flows on the Earth as a free gift of God. Firewood springs from the ground unearned. Yet we force these free communications of love into retrograde by imposition of economics.  Economics should serve us, yet we serve it.


In the  second reading from Office Saint Athanasius shows us the ultimate mercurial communication  of God’s Word, a communication that retrogrades punishment to mercy and cruelty to compassion. Athanasius reminds us, “By offering his own body he (Christ) wiped out the death towards which mankind was heading. … The Word’s purpose behind taking on a body was that he should become a sacrifice for bodies of the same kind. … We no longer die to be condemned, we die to be raised up and await the resurrection of all.” 





If Mercury’s retrograde sets us on edge because we fear losing beneficial communication, we can remember that the oppositional effect works both ways. The Word of God reverberates and communicates through the entire cosmos. During this celestial season we can practice our own toppling of the status quo. We can take stock of those things we “normally” see as a negative and through practice Christian freedom and discernment to find and fulfill their good use.
